We leave the trailhead at just about dawn
When we take our first break it is still early morn.
We dreamed of and planned this trip for some time
And waited ‘til now for a favorable clime.
We loaded our packs with gear and food
And drove to the trailhead in a light-hearted mood.
For now we are going out into the wild
Where once again we can be free as a child.
We’ll hike to a place where our soul can ascend
And worries or cares for a short time suspend.
This will be life as we wish it to be
For a day or a week or to eternity.
Until we have overcome our need to roam
And can once more return to our city home.
