FABLE  I:  HOW I CAPTURED MY FIRST BEAR

As I was riding my fabulous steed, Dauntless, one evening, admiring the grandeur of the mighty Grand Canyon, I heard a
loud growling noise behind me.  Upon turning, I observed a very large bear rushing at me from the depths of the surrounding
mountains.  He was approaching so rapidly I had time only to spur my horse.  Quickly, the trusty animal jumped so high that
the bear flew right under us and, unable to stop itself, continued on down to the Colorado River several thousand feet below.

The bear was a magnificent specimen and I realized instantly that it would make a marvelous addition to the animals in
my collection.  Without further thought, I unloaded a sack of quick-setting cement after the animal, placing it so that it would
land at the bear’s feet.  (I always carry a sack of cement as ballast for the horse, otherwise every time he leaped he would
become airborne.)

When the cement set, it entrapped the bear’s paws so that he could not escape.  Then, with my ever present lariat and
the mighty assistance of Dauntless, I hauled him back up to the rim of the canyon.

The bear is now on display in my large, modern museum alongside all the other animals I have caught.
